[Guide] Mahayana Punisher - Tang Sanzang (PR TSZ) Team Building

First off, credit to Arigato for creating the original TSZ team-building thread 2 years' ago. I've made use of some of the content and format in compiling this guide.

The PR version has a nice buff to both leader and active skills, and has also absorbed the passive 1.5x boost into the new stackable race-rune boost. The additional two seconds of movement time are well-needed to keep up with other leaders in current meta. 
Team building is similar to with the pre-PR version, namely that you will want a fusion card and 2 other races so that you can achieve the leader skill and also sync the team. The biggest game-changer is the fact that HP now syncs, which leads to the next section:

When TSZ was in its heyday 2 years' ago, the biggest question was the choice between Sirius Fusion and Minamoto Fusion. Sirius gave a full heal and DC charge together with two strong board explode/conversion actives, while Minamoto provided a nice 3-turn delay on controllable enemies. Now that PR TSZ also syncs HP, running Sirius Fusion gives you a whopping 52095 HP, doubling the HP of any reasonable team with Minamoto Fusion (e.g. running Colin or Fafnir to offset only brings you to 25-27k HP. Or in a team without fusion, you can hit 30.5k-32.5k HP). The regular 20k attacks we see in the current meta makes Sirius Fusion an almost-always pick. 

Also note that having Sirius Fusion in the team gives you a total attack stat of 5327 x 5 = 26635. If you decide not to include a fusion member, then your attack will be at most 2601 x 6 = 15606 if running Beelzebub. This is a 1.7x difference in attack stat. 
You could in theory run an off-colour member like PR Yog for a nominal 3270 x 5 = 16350 attack on light members and a semi-useful 2nd active but keep in mind that the team will still have a severe HP deficit compared to one that runs Sirius Fusion. 


Race Runes

With 4 slots out of the way, the next considerations are damage maximisation and utility skills. Considering the race rune part of PR TSZ's leaderskill, as well as the requirement to run 4 races, the options are: 

Human: Erza, Laxus, Sensui, Light Human Yan, Faraday, Confucius, Kurapika
Demon: Kejourou
Elf: Mavis, Marguerite, Shaiapouf, Hallowed Fairy (trash mob)
Dragon: Copper Bullet
Machina: Beaming Mechbot (trash mob)

Of these, the most appealing are
(1) Erza and Kejourou for "continuous" race rune generation (Erza needs to be activated 'every' turn, Kej only triggers once per wave).  
(2) Kurapika for enchantress effect with a 2.25x boost when switching form
(3) Mavis for a 3.375x boost 5 turns on / 5 turns off, as well as a slight bump to recovery. Unfortunately she's going to be initial CD 8-10 so it's not the most viable. 

For completeness, I will also mention the race rune generators for Gods and Beasts, but these are much lower on the priority list as they prevent you from using Sirius (or any other) fusion: 
God: Apollo, He Xian'gu, Indra
Beast: Canis Major, Ziz


MEMBER SELECTION CRITERIA


When we are choosing team members for a PR TSZ team these are the criteria we will consider:
1) Final race count of the team must be 4 or more.
2) How useful is the active skill? 
3) Does the card have extremely high attack, recovery or HP to help the synchronization? Conversely, low stats in any of these are negligible as long as you have other cards to offset. 
4) Does the card generate race runes to boost the team multiplier?

Demon:

The AR-form provides passive demon rune generation each wave and her low-CD convert is useful if you run into light rune drought. The enchanted effect at max turns can also be useful in some cases.

For a more defense-oriented team, Imanotsurugi can provide a 2-turn delay on controllable enemies to handle cases where Sirius' synced HP isn't enough to keep you alive.

If you don't have Kej, Illuminated Savant provides a 2-turn 2x boost at CD 6.

This is a useful utility skill at CD 5 to clear the board and also guarantees you at least 1 light combo. It's only 4 stars though, because if you're running Sirius fusion you already have 2x board explode/convert skills.

Paimon has two useful effects: the 2x boost and board restoration. Combine it with a convert skill for maximum impact!

Raizen can fill a few different utility roles: enchanted runes, converting away dark runes and creating heart runes, and also as a weak self-booster to break defence.

With VR Jack on board, you have 3 skills that make all runes have the effect of light. This one is worse than TSZ's though, due to the HP reduction (which might be a problem if you have burning or weathered runes on board). TSZ's skill also removes annoying board hazards, boosts attack and rec, and also counts as heart if all your members have synced stats. That said, it's still a reasonable booster.

It's a niche skill but can be useful to clear electric runes, particularly if they're light attribute and you have difficulty using rune stacking. Otherwise, Sirius fusion can handle these.

The damage reduction is quite low so there are better options available (e.g. Lisa Machina). There may be some rare cases where you don't want to dissolve light runes (e.g. if they're marked). 



Human: 

Top Picks: 
[Image: 100?cb=20190102110210&path-prefix=zh]Erza (): Erza's convert is based on accumulated rounds + 1, meaning that after 1 turn, you generate 2 runes. Hence, if you save your runes, you can gradually increase Erza's charge to max, giving you the benefit of additional light attacks.

[Image: 100?cb=20180528095636] [Image: 100?cb=20180528095637] Kurapika (): Kurapika provides a slightly different playstyle vs Erza, trading off the consistency of damage for a massive burst to handle really tough enemies. Kurapika's first skill gives the team an ongoing 1.66x-2x boost as opposed to the 2.25x from Erza's human runes. However, when you compare the max burst, Kurapika can switch and use his EP skill 2, which yields at least a 1.66 x 2.25 x 2 = 7.5x boost on the first turn and at least a 3.75x boost on the second turn, not to mention the massively extended movement time! This is in comparison to Erza's 2.25 x 1.5 (due to 10 vs 5 attacks) = 3.375x at max accumulation. Kurapika can also add 3 buffs to the top left of the screen, making him useful to remove enemy debuffs.

Sensui has a nice bag of tricks, including (intermittent) human rune generation, additional dark attribute attacks, neutralise, damage reduction, diffusion and sniping. 

Edison ():
Edison gives you a massive CD 6 burst due to the creation of 4-5 different types of race runes. The drawback... you can only use him for this massive nuke every 6 turns. So you'll need to trade this off with a more consistent source of damage e.g. Erza, Kurapika. 


Lesser/Utility Picks: Laxus, Hsia, Faraday, He Rann, Hubble, Gungnir, Confucius, Netero, Darkness  (Collab), Light Human Yan, Honda, Terry, Nathaniel/Katherine, Lisa, PKOL, Arthur, Modi & Magni, Morse, Camera, Zhang Jue,  (non-Collab) 



Elf:

Merlin is useful for two reasons: the extra attack part of her active skill is obviously tailored to TSZ, giving you a x2 multiplier at CD6 as well as some bonus HP recovery! The fact that the attacks are dark attribute can also be useful against enemies that reduce light damage. In addition, Merlin's recovery stat is a whopping 1203 making her one of the highest in the game and gives you a nice team boost for those pesky overheal stages. Merlin also adds 2 buffs to the top left of the screen.

Repeating the commentary from above, Mavis gives you a 3.375x boost 5 turns on / 5 turns off, as well as a slight bump to recovery. Unfortunately she's going to be initial CD 8-10 so it's not the most viable. You probably only want her for race rune generation if Kejourou and a human option are both unavailable.

If you need a heart converter then Iron Hamel is one of your best options. This is most useful specifically for heart shield, since TSZ's active skill already gives you the benefit of all runes = heart. It also has the side benefit of the highest recovery stat in the game (as at Jan 2019).

CD 15 for a defense break is not ideal, but sometimes you don't have any better options (for reference, your other light-attribute options are Great Schema of Light, He Rann and Ranto). Note that this is the 5* Elf version, so that you can still keep a fusion card in the team. Also, thanks to the HP sync that PR TSZ brings, you don't need to worry about Monkey King's abysmal stats. 

Lesser/Utility Picks: Marguerite, Nyx, Shaiapouf, Banana

Dragon:

Colin acts as a fast CD 5 time tunnel, board simplifier, and a (somewhat unreliable) light/heart converter in a pinch. As a dragon, his relatively high HP is also useful in cases when you aren't running Sirius fusion.

Daoloth gives you a 7+ combo boost, which can be useful for boards with annoying board hazards as well as high combo shields. The self-attack boost is a nice bonus, particularly if you're not already running Kurapika.

Ranto provides 2-3 skills at CD 6. He's most useful with a machina in the team as the full heal and defense break are nice utility skills. Otherwise he's not the top preference as there are better or more reliable options for enchanted runes and team multiplier.

Copper Bullet provides a dodge skill, enchanted board, and team boost. He also adds 2 buffs to the top left of the screen. The only downside is that CD 12 is really slow.

A 2.5x boost at CD 8 is ok, although in most cases you probably want something better and faster. He has chunky HP which can be useful if you're not running Sirius fusion. 

Machina

Lisa is most useful for the damage reduction skill, although it's a little fiddly to count the runes.

Lionel is one of the few cards with 'effect removal'. However, you'll need to weigh up using him vs Sensui as the latter has a more useful toolkit. It will most likely come down to whether you're bringing another human in the team.

The other light Lionel is most useful for the 2.5x-2.8x team recovery boost. It's not ideal to use him as a booster as when building a TSZ team you normally pick cards with the most useful active skills!


Much lower priority as Gods will stop you from running a fusion card, and beasts will mean you can't run Fenrir. 
God: Wukong, Jiutian Xiannu
Beast: Pluma, Zero, Ra, Baihu, Jolly, Ghatanothoa

SAMPLE TEAMS


Core Team

This is the standard setup, giving you 52k HP and high attack, as well as fast/passive conversion and race rune actives so you never need to worry about rune drought.
Depending on the stage, you can switch out Kejourou for a utility card, or Erza for Kurapika/Sensui.  

Delay Team

Sometimes you just need a 3-turn delay... so that's why you bring Minamoto Fusion. It may seem unintuitive to bring this fusion, as it reduces your team HP from 30k to 25k, but sometimes the extra turn delay is a lifesaver (or you're trying to complete a light-team achievement). It's also a nice boost to Minamoto's conversion active. Of course, it may be just as viable to bring the core team and switch out Kej for Imanotsurugi. 
Erza is there for the ongoing human runes and extra attacks. Colin boosts the team HP and brings a fast time tunnel / board simplifier since you don't have Fenrir's dual skills. 


Non-Fusion/Utility Team

As suggested by wong ah neh, this team gives you a variety of utility skills plus race runes to keep team damage up. Lionel can be switched for Lisa Machina if you don't need the effect removal.

*Notes: Confirm whether Sensui snipe is before or after attack. Sounds like it's after. 



FINAL COMMENTS


*DO NOT bring the 10th seal dragonware on your human/demon members. The stat boosts break the second half of TSZ's active skill.

Random dude abusing me on youtube but there is a reasonable question there so I'm responding to it here in case others are wondering the same thing, until I finish writing the guide:

Wukong makes sense because you might need a defense break but it comes at a big cost - your multiplier. Adding He Xian'gu gives you race runes but at the cost of your multiplier so it's not worth it compared to other options.

1) Kurapica is a guy, so it should be his, not her.
2) when against non dark enemies his equivalent damage bonus increases since then he does 6x instead of 4x, in other words vs non dark enemies he is actually 2x team attack equivalent (counting with a fusion member)

I do think Ranto castle dragon should rank higher for member selection, especially if you form TSZ team without fusion card.
Its active have 3 effect if you fit in the right team member.
eg. TSZ, erza, imanosturugi/kejorou, basic lionel, ranto, TSZ
Ronto team skill -2cd with 4 races in team, 6cd for all that effect.

Edison, the new scientist debuted mid Feb, is the only card so far which can utilize TSZ new skill regarding race runes. With his converting skill to all races, he becomes no.1 in human choice.
